the air temperature hovered around the freezing mark most of the day but finally worked its way higher in the afternoon, with some help from the full sun coming down through a clear sky ( Read more... )

today's warmer temperature sped up the melting of the remaining snow, bringing forth puddles on the Circle and the other walkways to the delight of our amphibians.

today's high might have made it up to that 32°f freeze point.  or maybe it didn't.  either way, the wind didn't let up so it was colder than I would have liked though nowhere near as bad as yesterday's cut-to-the-bone superchilled cemetery wind.

an inch or so of snow appeared overnight.  usually when it comes things get more stark: white where it has fallen under a leaden grey sky, and everything else seems to slide over into the darker end of the chromatic range.

the past few days of mostly overcast gave way to an intense clear light.  cold, windy clear light. 
having taken the day off I was at liberty to head out to it and freeze my [quaint expression] off see its effects.

as I headed out Friday morning to a difficult and depressing day at the office, it was even harder than usual to leave the Grove with the light so clear and abundant.  this instilled in me a wish -- and resolve -- to get out into that light if it were to last into the weekend.

it came as a surprise to me that there are cultivars of pokeweed.  it's one of those opportunistic species whose arrival is greeted by dismay by any gardener.

though unlovely to behold in any phase of its perennial cycle, even I have to relent somewhat as its blossoms turn into fruit.
